The EarthRights International’s Mekong School in Chiang Mai, Thailand is a unique training program for specialists from the Mekong region (Yunnan/China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) whose work focuses on environmental issues and civil society. By using experiential learning methods, the six month-long training programs get to equip participants from the region with the skills required to conduct research, gather data, and advocate around socio-environmental issues affecting the region.
Upon the completion of the inaugural year of the ERI-Mekong School, the Mekong School Alumni Network was formed and has been growing up in strength alongwith the School year by year. The alumni group developed the overall campaign theme of increasing the participation of affected communities and civil society in regional development process.

MAN’s visions
Due to the widely differing political contexts in each Mekong region country, the students decided to develop an internal mission statement to reflect the spirit of the alumni group, as well as an external mission statement using language that will pose undue risk to alumni operating in politically sensitive areas.
Internal Mission Statement:
ERS Mekong alumni will collaborate to monitor destructive development projects and strengthen earthrights protection in the Mekong basin countries.
External Mission Statement:
ERS Mekong alumni will collaborate to promote harmonious relationships between humans and the environment in the Mekong basin countries.

MAN’s goals
Following are the goals that the Mekong School alumni identified for their group:

  1. To empower ourselves by increasing our knowledge and skills
  2. To network with other civil society groups
  3. To support communities in their efforts to attain the skills and knowledge necessary to increase their participation in the development process
  4. To monitor international financial institution (IFI), corporate and government involvement in large infrastructure projects
  5. To take action to stop destructive development projects
  6. To build understanding between governments and civil society

In addition to shared goals, the alumni developed the overall campaign theme of increasing the participation of affected communities and civil society in the development process including;

  • the right to access information from governments, companies and financers
  • requirement for EIA/ SIA to be completed in the early planning stages
  • the right to sustainable livelihoods
  • the right to information about development alternatives
  • the right to be meaningfully involved in decision making processes
  • free, informed and prior consent of communities affected by destructive development
